Why did you choose The Club at Hillbrook?
We chose Hillbrook for several reasons. First, the setting is stunning. The grounds have a natural beauty that is in line with what we envisioned for our wedding day. Second, Hillbrook is located in our hometown Chagrin Falls, where we both grew up and met. It was very meaningful to be married where our relationship first began and our families have roots.
Did you have any childhood wedding dreams that came to life in your real wedding?
I was the flower girl in my Aunt's wedding at Hillbrook as a child, which was my first real memory and perception of what a wedding should be like. Even then, I remember thinking how beautiful the setting was. Little did I know I would one day celebrate my own marriage there!
Invitations are the first thing guests see. Tell us about yours.
Our invitations were classic with a romantic feel. I fell in love with the watercolor floral design as soon as I saw it. We carried the motif throughout our save the dates, invitation suite, and place cards.
We had an engagement party over Memorial Day Weekend. I invited all of the bridesmaids to come, and planned to ask them at the party all together. I assembled cute little gift bags for each of them with a DIY mini glitter champagne bottle, a personalized card, and a confetti popper. The girls all opened the confetti poppers before the party started, which revealed the message “will you be my bridesmaid?” inside. It was a fun way to kick off the engagement party and future celebrations to come!
Some of our favorite touches were the details that were fun and true to our personalities. Our decision to forego the traditional wedding cake (neither of us are big fans) in lieu of an ice cream station, our signature cocktail – a “Marry” Murphy, and our Chick-Fil-A late night snack all added to the fun of the celebration.
Wedding hashtags are the new thing. What was your wedding hashtag? How did you let guests know about the hashtags?
We actually had two because we couldn't decide! #EatDrinkAndBeMurphy2016 was a play on the phrase "Eat, Drink, and be Merry" and incorporated Will's last name. #ChagrinFallsingInLove was a reference to the hometown where we met growing up, and where the wedding took place. The first was a little more fun and playful, the second more sentimental, so we felt they were a nice mix. We then had some custom signage displayed at the wedding to let guests know to use the hashtag on social media.
Your flower arrangements were amazing. Tell us how the design and details evolved.
We wanted the flowers to have a naturally beautiful, romantic feel. We decided to use all white flowers in various textures with natural greenery as an accent. Our florist used white mums, peonies, roses, anemone and seeded eucalyptus in the bouquets and centerpieces. My bouquet was a beautiful cascade tied with silk ribbon. For centerpieces, we used vintage silver pedestals to hold the arrangements. The tables were accented with mercury glass candle votives, and the linens were kept simple and classic in all white. The head table was decorated with a long garland of greenery and white flowers, tea lights and tall candlesticks. Our florist also created a “floral swing” statement piece on a wooden ledge crafted out of an old barn beam, which hung above the head table. It was beautiful and unique!
Tell us about your dress!
My mom and sister came to visit me in NYC for a weekend of wedding dress shopping. While at Kleinfeld’s, Romona Keveza happened to have a trunk show that day. My mom spotted one of the trunk show models in a gorgeous one-shoulder ball gown, and sent her to my fitting room to convince me to try it on. I wasn't planning on buying a ball gown, but when I tried it on I fell in love with the simplistic, timeless style with a bit of fashion mixed in. Plus, it had pockets!
The gorgeous setting is what initially drew us to Hillbrook. Beyond that, however, the level of service we received when planning our wedding made the experience that much better. Gina, the event coordinator, helped us manage every detail with ease. The day of the wedding, we didn't have to worry about the little details because we knew everything was taken care of. Our guests raved about the wedding and how beautiful Hillbrook was!
What is the one piece of advice you wish someone had told you before your wedding?
Everyone told us how fast the day would fly by- and they were right! But it was the best day of our lives, and I wouldn't change a thing!
